The Covering Procedure for Stallions and Mares

We are always amazed at the fascination with how mares and stallions interact, here’s our quick breakdown of how it works:

Pre-Cover Preparation

  1. Health Checks: Both the stallion and mare undergo thorough health checks to ensure they are free from infectious diseases and in good reproductive health. This includes blood tests, swabs, and overall physical examinations.
  1. Nutritional Support: Adequate nutrition is crucial for both the mare and stallion. A balanced diet rich in essential vitamins and minerals supports reproductive health.
  1. Estrus Detection: Mares are monitored for signs of estrus (heat) using behavioural observations and ultrasound scans to determine the optimal time for covering.
  1. Stallion Preparation: Stallions are given a light exercise routine to ensure they are fit and healthy. Semen quality is regularly checked to ensure high fertility rates.

The Covering Process

  1. Introducing the Mare: The mare is introduced to the covering area and may be teased by a teaser stallion to confirm she is in estrus. Once she is ready, she is taken to the stallion.
  1. The Covering: The actual covering is carefully supervised by experienced handlers to ensure the safety of both the mare and stallion. The stallion mounts the mare and ejaculates, which completes the natural mating process.
  1. Post-Cover Monitoring: After covering, the mare is monitored for any signs of discomfort or complications. Ultrasound scans are conducted about 14-16 days post-cover to check for pregnancy.

Post-Cover Care

  1. Rest and Recovery: The mare is given time to rest and recover in a stress-free environment. Light exercise may be resumed to maintain her overall health.
  1. Nutritional Support: A nutrient-rich diet is continued to support the mare during the early stages of pregnancy. Supplements may be added as recommended by the veterinarian.
  1. Regular Check-Ups: Regular veterinary check-ups are scheduled to monitor the mare’s pregnancy and ensure both her health and the developing foal’s health are on track.

Conclusion

The covering procedure for stallions and mares involves meticulous pre-cover preparation, careful monitoring during the covering process, and comprehensive post-cover care. Ensuring the health and well-being of both the mare and stallion throughout this process is crucial for successful breeding.
