The Sunday Syndicates Post – Vol. 4, Issue 3

We kicked off our 2024 stable tours at Carriganog Racing with Classic winning trainer Joseph O’Brien. We were delighted to welcome over 20 owners down to the Hill to watch Spin Lizzy (Gleneagles ex. Spinning Queen) and State Of Joy (Starspangledbanner ex. Divine Authority) being put through their paces. Both fillies are in exceptional shape and are on course for a very exciting 2024.

Joseph giving Dylan his instructions pre gallop.

Spin Lizzy was first out under Dylan Browne McMonagle who recently returned from his stint in Australia. She did a breeze upsides in preparation for a racecourse gallop next month. She is almost ready to hit the track and we’re looking forward to watching her debut. In between lots we were treated to breakfast in Joseph’s span new owners room which is a fantastic facility. Tara had a full spread for owners and Joseph was kind enough to answer questions and give some insights on training horses.

State Of Joy really caught the eye under tack.

After breakfast we headed back up the Hill to see 2yo State Of Joy being put through her paces. She has done exceptionally well since we bought her. She’s a big, scopey well set mare with a super attitude. Joseph really likes what he is seeing so far and thinks she’ll be out during the first quarter of the season. She walked through the stalls and cantered up sides. Her work will start to build up from next month as we work toward the start of the flat season in March and this lady could be one of our earliest runners. We had a huge run on shares after the weekend and she is now almost sold out.

She’s a mature filly. We’ll start building up her work next month and all being well she’ll be a filly that runs in the first quarter of the season.

Our stable tour this week takes us to Peter Fahey’s to see Milan Dollar Lady in action. After that we have Johnny Murtaghs, Willie Mullins and Rodrigo Goncalves all too look forward to. A big thank you to Joseph, Tara and all the team in Owning for their wonderful hospitality on what was a thoroughly enjoyable morning.

Guess who’s back? Ellen’s back.

Ellen Kelly returned to Closutton during the week after a little setback kept her on the sidelines for much of her 4yo career. Now a much bigger, stronger, mature filly we’re very excited to see what Willie can unearth in this attractive daughter of Westerner.

She has been in the expert care of Sonny Carey and his team for well over two months now so she’ll be ready to hit the ground running and hopefully work towards a springtime debut. She was reported in fine fettle on the gallops on Friday morning, well up on the bridle, hungry for work and delighted to be back in the jungle. Watch this space.

Ellen’s arrival unfortunately coincided with West End Victory’s departure as a small setback means her intended Sunday comeback will be put on hold for another couple of months. The bumper winner had been working and moving very well and was set to be one of our flag bearers for the season ahead but we’ve no doubt like her paternal half sister, Ellen Kelly, she’ll be back better than ever after some TLC in Tinnakill House Stud.

Coulstar back on track

We were delighted with Coulstar’s comeback run on Tuesday evening after she shaped with considerable promise in a hot contest after a 202 day layoff. She was only beaten a little over 2L’s in the rated race where she had plenty of highly touted, expensive purchases in front of her. She left the door ajar for a potential step up in trip on her next start in a couple of weeks time. We had her pigeonholed as out and out 5f sprinter but in fact she may indeed handle a step up in trip to 6f or even 7f. The plan will be to return to Dundalk in a couple of weeks time in an attempt to take our #BargainBreezer23 squad strike rate to 100%.

Sharp on course for DRF Objective

Exciting young national hunt filly Sharp Object was given an entry in the Grade 2 Mares Bumper on Sunday February the 4th at Leopardstown. The daughter of Diamond Boy will have to bounce back after her disappointing Cheltenham display but we love coming into this race off the back of a disappointing last up effort with the underdog status…

Grangee and Jody Townend return victorious after their last gasp win at 18/1 in the 2021 Grade 2 Mares Bumper.

A field of 17 were entered during the week for the Sunday finale with her Gowran and Cheltenham conqueror’s Aurora Vega and Baby Kate heading affairs. We’re confident that a return to form should see her bang there with them and a huge crowd is expected on course to cheer her on.

Not Far off favourite

Far Above was chalked up at 9/1 fourth favourite to be Champion First Season Sire by Paddy Power during the week. Given the reports we’re receiving from everyone (and I mean everyone) that doesn’t look to be a bad bet whatsoever if it lasts!

Far Above on show at the ITM Stallion Show.

The breeze-up men are raving, the sales agents are falling in love and we’ve heard from one of the best 2yo trainers in the game that a Far Above filly is his favourite 2yo. We’re feeling pretty coy having two strapping colts heading into training this year. Two colts that received some very positive bulletins from their handlers during the week.

Johhny B meets Ruby

I was delighted to have a chat with Ruby at Naas racecourse last Friday before the Fifty Stars “what about those first foals” 4yo bumper. We talked everything from Fifty Stars exciting first foals to horses under both codes to keep an eye out for. If you haven’t seen it take a look below.

Leading The Field with JC

I wasn’t the only one grabbing the headlines this week as Jack sat down with Ronan Groome of the Irish Field for a thoroughly enjoyable interview which looked into industry issues, solutions and some innovative thinking. He also covers off the Syndicates.Racing story to date and highlights some horses to keep an eye out for going forward. If you haven’t heard it yet take a listen here.

QOA entered up for hatrick seeking bid

Queen Of Atlantis has been given an entry in Lingfield on Friday over 1m2f as she bids to make it three wins on the trot. She’s second top weight after a 3lb rise for her Southwell heroics. She’s been crying out for a step up in trip so we’re excited to hopefully give it a go on Friday. She’ll have to come through her final preparations this week with Peter Chapple-Hyam but it’ll be an exciting weeks build up to say the least.

Syndicates Horse of the Week

Harry Angel has been a sire who’s been on our radar for quite some time. In fact when you break down his statistics he compares favorably if not better than his first crop competitors such as Sioux Nation and Havana Grey. He has a whopping 11% stakes performers to first crop runners and 50% 2yo winners to runners in 2023. Cross that with a half sister to a Coventry winner and we have got ourselves one hell of an exciting proposition.

Keeping with the under the radar / shrewdie approach after her €10,000 Tattersalls Ireland purchase we sent her to the up and coming young Curragh trainer Diego Dias who has 1000 Guineas entrant Gaenari to look forward to this season amongst many others. Diego liked our filly so much he took a leg in her along with the man charged with pre-training her, Rodrigo Goncalves, who graced last week’s Issue.

Harry Angel ex. Listed placed Bergmask at Tattersalls Ireland.

Rodrigo reports her as an “athletic filly with a nice bit of scope. She takes her work really well and looks like she could be out early summer.” In fact we liked this filly so much that we went and bought her dam to support our new stallion Bouttemont this season. We’ll be hoping Diego can work his magic and give us yet another pedigree update. Even if he doesn’t she’ll always have huge residual value given her illustrious family.
