The Sunday Syndicates Post – Vol. 4, Issue 16

John is away this week so I’m in the hot seat and it’s probably just as well – I have a lot of explaining to do. This week, I went to the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale and bought us a horse who didn’t do a good breeze. Why the hell did I do that? Forgive me father for I have sinned. Let me confess why I thought he was the play of the sale.

The Craven Breeze-Up is a very expensive sale, the average price was £135,000 and the top lot (the likely last unraced Galileo to sell at public auction) sold for £1m. A breeze-up is a timed two furlong solo gallop – where we have done well before is find an information edge alongside a mountain of statistical data we work through. We have bought horses that were kicked just before their breeze, we bought a filly who raced on the wrong side of the track and with this guy, he could have been what Akon was singing about.

We’ve bought two horses off Donovan Bloodstock in the last two years. The first we bought for £25,000 and sold for €300,000. The second, Queen of Atlantis, has won her last three starts in a row. When you build a relationship with a seller like this it’s pretty simple – don’t tell us the truth and we won’t be a customer. Deliver the goods and we will keep coming back. I would encourage you to watch this colts breeze closely. He is constantly turning his head looking for a horse to race. Danny Donovan and his team thought this might be the case. He had sparkled when racing other horses at home but he got bored and lonely when they started to do practice solo breezes and flagged to me he could be one to slip through the cracks despite his big engine.

This created a really interesting dynamic. Here’s a horse that I happen to know works very well when doing what he’ll actually have to do when on a racecourse – race other horses. He is not very good at doing what he will never need to do again – perform a solo breeze over two furlongs.

That is why we bought him and he became our first bargain breezer of 2024. Usually at this point I would provide a link and encourage you all to buy shares however he’s already been too popular and so if you don’t mind I need to give priority access to those who put themselves on the Bargain Breezer Priority List as we have only 20% left (if you did out yourself on the list, keep a close eye on you inbox or drop me a message).

Breeze-up season has only begun so don’t worry we’ll have more (I’m heading to the Goffs UK Breeze-Up at 5.45am on Tuesday god help me). To make sure you’re on the list, add yourself below. We’re also thinking of grouping a few together for a multi-horse syndicate so if you’re up for that make sure to let John know.

Add yourself to BarGain Breezer list for next time

Meta on the microphone

I’m very proud of my mother Meta’s efforts to advance positive animal welfare throughout the world. Last year, she completed a MSc in Animal Behaviour & Welfare. She’s now taking those insights and starting a conversation with the world with her very own podcast. It isn’t out just yet (we’ll let you know don’t worry!) but if you have topics you’d like her to cover or questions you’ve never had answered on how your animals can thrive send aimee@syndicates.racing a message and we’ll try get it covered for you in her chats.

Could we be about to have Far Above’s first winner

I think this might just be the week. Far Above has only had three runners so far (two have placed) but I think this week could be the week we see his first winner.

Far Above The Law (Far Above) runs for us in Pontefract on Monday. He, in a weird kind of way, is Far Above’s first winner already – he was an impressive winner of a barrier trial before debut. The second and third of that barrier trial won on debut. Far Above The Law had a nightmare first trip to the races, missing the kick and veering on the bend – hopefully Monday we get to see barrier trial Far Above The Law.

Far Beyond (Far Above) also runs for us in Chantilly on Friday. He’s a powerful colt – just look at those muscles shimmer above as he works out in Chantilly. It’s a hot conditions race (so unlike a maiden it’s got several previous winners in it) but Tim Donworth is confident of a good showing. I will be at the tasting for my wedding when he runs – I hope I will be ordering a double helping of Chantilly cream…

That’s the lot team. I hope you haven’t missed John too much. As always, if we can do anything to help give us a shout.

P. S Insider tip – email Aimee on Aimee@syndicates.racing if you want the best help (she’s the most organised!).
