The Sunday Syndicates Post – Vol. 3, Issue 5

There was a sense of deja-vu on Thursday as Jody Townend climbed on board West End Victory at Naas for a racecourse gallop. Jody of course partnered Grangee to Grade 2 DRF success two years ago this weekend. West End Victory was joined by fellow Closutton stable mate Cabaret King at the track for a schooling race over 1m6f as the inch ever closer to their debuts.

Cabaret King an imposing individual taking in his surroundings in the parade ring under Eliot Ohrgen

Jody was very happy with West End Victory. She can be quite a difficult ride at home but she was handled beautifully by Jody who said “she can pull and hang a little bit but when she got into the swing of things she was the finest. I thought I had nothing left at the bottom of the hill but when I let her down she really picked up and then I couldn’t pull her up!” Patrick Mullins said “she’s hardy, Jody is happy with her and it was a good piece of work”. She’s certainly got the juices flowing.

Cabaret King sat in behind West End Victory and whilst being a little green he also completed a nice piece of work. His jockey, amateur Elliot Ohrgen, said “he was green early on but overall it went nicely. I gave him a slap down the shoulder 1f from home and he really came alive underneath me and finished out well.” Patrick said that he will come on from that piece a lot so hopefully we will be able to continue on the Cabaret dynasty.

Flat fillies taking shape

Dermot was on hand at the Curragh on Saturday morning to watch Fast Tara undertake a routine piece of work on Saturday morning under Alex Egan. Fast Tara is a filly that has us excited for the upcoming season and she is displaying all of the right signs thus far. We received an upbeat bulletin from her trainer Johnny Murtagh which you can view below.

Syndicate member Steve Straker popped into Amy Murphy’s on Saturday and kindly sent us on a video of our Zoustar filly. It’s striking just how well she has developed into such a fine big scopey filly. She’s a very exciting edition to the class of 2023. Take a look at her below.

Foal watch

Foals started flying during the week as the weather became a lot milder and mares settled into the season. Tinnakill, Ian Thompson and I welcomed a draft of quality foals by exciting sires out of nice mares during the week.

From L-R is a Ten Sovereigns filly out of the stakes winning Crisaffs Queen. Her full sister sold for 58,000gns at the 2021 foal sales. The next foal bred by Ian and his wide Nicola is by G1 producing sire Kuroshio who looks set to have a very exciting 2023 with two horses aiming for the Guineas. Miss Oria produced a lovely first foal by Kodi Bear at the Irish National Stud whilst I welcomed a Kuroshio colt out of Ambigious.

Thank you.
