The Sunday Syndicates Post – Vol. 3, Issue 4

On our relentless search for winners we aim to try find the best value possible to get our owners into the winners enclosure. One of the ways we do this is to take calculated risks (aka punt) on sires. Often times we can’t afford the upper echelons of the stallion ranks but we are best placed to take advantage of unfashionable, cold or unproven sires due to in depth research and statistical analysis of the bloodstock market.

Take for example New Bay. Whilst we tend to stay away from the unproven sires Jack was always a fan of New Bay being a French Derby winning son of Dubawi. Now we’re not saying that we had a crystal ball and could foresee just how high New Bay would rise in a short period of time but he did supply Syndicates.Racing with our first 2yo winner in the shape of New Emerald Bay. She was closely followed by fellow 2yo winner and stakes placed Mise le Meas and we’re hoping that our filly out of Need You Now can rack up the treble this year.

Golden Mayflower was picked up for a mere 14,000gns when Golden Horn started to go cold but we were satisfied that he had had a top class 2yo filly in his first crop, a G1P colt and a higher percentage of horses rated 90+ than most of the top stallions that year. That punt was justified when she became our first 2yo debut winner picking up a £20k GBB Bonus in the process.

Nós na Gaoithe was a €30k Derby Sale purchase when Yeats had hit somewhat of a slump and was deemed unfashionable in the national hunt market. She ranked as a very good physical, was a half sister Rathvinden from one of the best staying families in the book. Shattered Love, Augusta Kate, Mount Ida were all top drawer fillies by the sire so we knew he was well able to produce the goods. He of course has gone on to claim his first Champion Sire title last season and could be on course for the double this year. Nós is a dual winner for us and ranks as a very exciting older filly this season.

Over the last couple of seasons we’ve punted on Westerner. Again he was a sire that we felt the market was under appreciating. Year in year out he produces a top notcher of immense talent and whilst we still have to wait to see if our punt will pay off we have two lovely fillies in the shape of West End Victory and Ellen Kelly.

Ellen Kelly forms part of the next generation of Syndicates.Racing star fillies

The next sire that has us very excited is Masked Marvel. The 15yo son of Montjeu has risen from a stud fee of €3k to a career high of €12,500 in 2023. He’s now had two G1 winners from his second crop courtesy of 8L Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris winner Sel Jem and Honeysuckle’s conquerer Teahupoo who is the 3/1 favourite for the Stayers Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

At the Tattersalls Ireland July Store sale Masked Marvel wasn’t perceived to be the sire that he is today. Yes, Teahupoo played his part but he had not yet won a G1, Maskada was plying her trade in the UK before a fruitful switch to Henry de Bromhead and Sel Jem did his racing in France so he may have been missed by some. Both pedigree and physical ticked our boxes so we were happy to “punt” on the sire.

Since then Masked Marvel is taking somewhat of a meteoric rise up through the stallion ranks, he’s had a new Grade 1 winner, the dams half brother Latest Exhibition has added further Grade 1 placing to the page, our filly has turned inside out since the sales and she’s pleasing team Cromwell. Hopefully this calculated risk will have a fruitful outcome.

Foal Watch

Stud farms all across the Northern Hemisphere have started welcoming foals into the world. The dream of the next Champion blossoms in ever breeders mind. Our breeding syndicate is waiting with bated breath as Lady Breffni landed at the Irish National Stud this week as she prepares to give birth for the first time. We look forward to sharing pictures of her Fifty Stars foal in the SSP in the coming weeks. Good luck to all her owners who are about to become breeders for the first time.

Trainers in form

Gavin Cromwell is operating off a 26% strike rate in the last 14 days and had a successful English raid during the week with the very impressive Jeremys Flame who looks firmly on track for the Mares Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.

Willie Mullins recorded yet another remarkable feat yesterday as he recorded his 4,000th winner courtesy of Bronn. He registered his 3,000th winner on June 6th 2018 meaning he’s racked up 1,000 winners in 4 1/2 years. We’ve been lucky enough to contribute to that tally courtesy of Cabaret Queen, Grangee and Nós na Gaoithe. Here’s hoping they won’t be the last.
