The Sunday Syndicates Post – Vol. 3, Issue 37

It has been another whirlwind year for everything at Syndicates HQ and as we prepare to ring in the New Year we said we’d take a whistle stop tour around 2023 to bring you the thrils, spills and frills.

January

70+ owners joined us for our first big owners day out at Naas racecourse to celebrate the Grade 1 Lawlors of Naas Novice Hurdle and the Fifty Stars Standing at Sunnyhill Stud Bumper.

February

Our first breeding syndicate could call themselves breeders for the first time as Lady Breffni foaled a belting filly by Fifty Stars.

Fifty Stars ex. Lady Breffni filly at a few days old.

WEST END VICTORY maintained our 100% first time out bumper record and in doing so provides Jody with the final winner on her claim. I think we also broke the record by having over 40 owners in attendance in Thurles for a raucous winners enclosure reception.

March

Jack returned with the Art Of The Mating Series when he was joined by guest hosts to discuss what you should breed your mare to. Looking back on it there were some very good suggestions from the panel so maybe we can get Jack to come back this Spring with another panel of experts.

April

FAST TARA built on her impressive juvenile campaign and broke her maiden on her first start as a 3yo giving us our first Bellewstown winner.

Another big Syndicates.Racing crew was on track to welcome the filly home and accept the trophy.

Our star mare Cabaret Queen gave birth to her second foal, a filly by Fifty Stars who bares a striking resemblance to her mother.

May

The breeze-ups rolled into town and we managed to secure one of the fastest fillies at the Tattersalls Guineas Breeze-up sale. An Advertise filly out of the stakes winning Waterways joined the team at a cost of 40,000gns. She was sold out in less than 24hrs and went on to be named Queen Of Atlantis by her owners.

Cabaret Princess joined the team at the Goffs UK Spring Store Sale for £36,000. She bore a striking resemblance to her older sister and has taken her pre-training with ease. She joins Willie Mullins in 2024 and could debut in the Spring.

We hosted a nice group of owners to the Tattersalls Ireland Goresbridge Breeze-up sale where they helped us pick out both Orderofthephoenix (Phoenix Of Spain ex. Santa Anabaa) and Coulstar (Coultsy ex. Iamnoangel) for €60,000 and €20,000 respectively.

June

Sharp Object becomes our first purchase from the point-to-point field when joining John McConnell for £42,000. The flashy daughter of Diamond Boy was a hugely eye catching 2nd on her point debut in Tattersalls for Paddy Turley.

A busy Goffs Arkle Sale saw two new purchases join the Syndicates.Racing / Willie Mullins axis with a fine, big, strapping daughter of Diamond Boy for €34,000 from Kilbarry Lodge Stud being the first.

And a precocious, sharp, attractive Jeu St Eloi filly for a scarcely believable €26,000 making her my value purchase of the year.

We didn’t have a runner at Royal Ascot this year but that didn’t stop us from welcoming plenty of familiar faces to the Irish picnic in the carpark. We had so many owners pop in to sale hello and have a few drinks. It’s always one of the highlights of the year.

Queen Of Atlantis made a highly promising debut to finish 2nd in a very hot Newbury maiden getting our #BargainBreezer23 squad off to an exciting start.

June wasn’t over just yet and nor were the store purchases. Two more recruits joined us at the Tattersalls Ireland Derby sale with fillies by Great Pretender and Waldpark joining our most exciting team of national hunt horses to date. The Great Pretender joins Willie and the Waldpark is our first national hunt horse with Henry de Bromhead. Being a half sister to a Grade 1 winner Jack put her up as our value purchase of the year at €17,500.

July

FREEDOM FALLS built on her impressive 2-y-o campaign when she broke her maiden in Navan over 6f. She had to survive a lengthy stewards enquiry which added to the drama of the day but no group of owners deserved a victory more.

August

Fast Tara ran a career best to be 4th in a Listed race at the Galway Festival when she was unlucky not to get 3rd. We had a big group of owners at the Ballybrit base for one of the hightlight race meetings of the year.

We welcomed over 100 owners to Tinnakill for our annual Breakfast With The Stars event with special guest Patrick Mullins. Stars of past, present and future were on display for their adoring owners.

Our latest stallion prospect was announced in the shape of BOUTTEMONT. He represented a syndicate with a difference giving owners the opportunity to buy into the racing and breeding rights of Acclamation’s fastest stallion son. In usual Syndicates.Racing fashion we took to some innovative marketing ideas and produced the below ad which went viral.

On stallions, the first Far Above yearlings hit the market at Doncaster and I was delighted to have bred his first horse through the ring which realised £32,000 to SackvilleDonald and Hugo Palmer. That duo also went onto secure another Far Above colt from Tally-Ho for £40,000. Not bad for a stallion who stood his first season at stud for €6,000.

Rathbarry Stud couldn’t resist Bouttemont’s race record, pedigree and looks and came on board to stand him beside his legendary father at their Co. Cork base. Again, we took to some innovative marketing ideas…

September

Bouttemont becomes our first runner in a Group 1 when he lined out in the Flying Five Stakes at the Curragh. Unfortunately a deluge of rain went against the fast ground loving sprinter and he could never get on terms, wheel spinning on ground he hates.

SHARP OBJECT bolts up on debut yet again maintaining our impressive bumper record first time out. She is our first horse with John McConnell and it was great to get the partnership off to the perfect start under a peach of a ride from Alex Harvey.

Tattersalls Ireland rolled around and we were delighted to add a Harry Angel half to Coventry winner Buratino to the team. The elegant filly was a bargain purchase at just €10,000 at joins the hugely exciting young Curragh trainer, Diego Dias.

A lot of pedigree for little money.

We bought what I’m declaring as the best looking yearling we’ve ever bought at the Goffs Orby Book 2 sale from Camas Park. Our Ravens Pass filly out of Seschat was a steal at €22,000 being a full sister to the blacktype Castle Of May. She heads to Johnny Murtagh and has the Goffs Two Million Series written all over her.

Sharp Object backed up less than two weeks after her debut victory to run a mighty fine 2nd to Aurora Vega in the Listed Mucklemeg Bumper in Gowran gaining blacktype on just her second start.

October

Bouttemont yet again grabbed the headlines as he was desperately unlucky not to get a clear passage in the Group 1 Prix de l’Abbaye finishing the 5f sprint on the bridle.

GRAND LARCENY got our Australian Colts Syndicate members off to a flyer winning in Newcastle on just his second start.

Our Starspangledbanner filly joined the flat squad at the October Book 2 sales in partnership with Joseph O’Brien. She has been named State Of Joy and could have Royal Ascot written all over her.

ORDEROFTHEPHOENIX absolutely bolted up on just her second start for the #BargainBreezer23 squad and gave a good ROI to her owners having been snapped up privately after her taking performance.

RUN HARRY RUN was another winner for the Aussies winning on his first start back after a spell.

Study Of Man was a sire high on our lists to secure at this years yearling sales and we were delighted to get such an attractive daughter of the exciting young sire, out of a talented mare heading to Ollie Sangster at Tattersalls Book 3. She’s Jacks sleeper of the group and one that will be primed for some midsummer action.

To France we marched and to Far Above we looked. France has some of the best prize money available worldwide so how best to take advantage of that with an early, sharp, fast looking Far Above colt out of a stakes winner from the famous Park Express family. He heads to Tim Donworth and we’ll be in search of some of those early season €50,000 maidens with lucrative French Premiums.

Far Above ex. Sopran Verne colt has speed written all over him.

CAPITALISATION made it 3 winners in 10 days for the Aus syndicate with an impressive victory for the Lindsay Park team.

November

RUN HARRY RUN started the month off with a bang winning his second consecutive race at Bendigo for Peter Moody highlighting himself as a very smart colt.

We added our final yearling of the year at the Goffs Autumn Open Sale and our first with the highly progressive and talented young Newmarket trainer Alice Haynes. The colt by Far Above is very much in the shape of his father and could be our earliest runner of the 2024 season.

We are delighted to be partnering with Barry Doyle and the lads at Champ.ie for their weekly podcast. A highly informative and enjoyable weekly show full of tips, news and craic on a regular basis.

RUN HARRY RUN won the Group 3 Blue Sapphire Stakes at Caulfield making it his third victory on the trot in the space of a month and potentially laying down a claim for a spot on the plane to Royal Ascot in 2024.

December

The Class Of 2024 went live and we announced full details and packages on all our horses over both codes. Eoin Baxter of Baxter Edits put together a series of smart videos for us to display our most exciting class to date.

Lady Breffni’s first foal became the highest priced filly by any first season sire to sell at the Goffs December Foal sales when she fetched €26,000 from Pat Fennessey of Ballinaroone Stud. The cracking daughter of Fifty Stars claimed high plaudits from all of the top judges. Her dam went onto sell for €62,000 the very next day in foal to Blue Bresil.

QUEEN OF ATLANTIS capped off a fine year on the track for us when she won in nice fashion on December 22nd becoming our second of three #BargainBreezer23 to win at two.

Thank you.

Thank you all for your continued support throughout 2023. We created some lasting memories, made plenty of new friends and had plenty of new winners to celebrate. Our aim is to improve year on year and we’ve managed to do that every year so far. We have without a shadow of a doubt put together our most impressive team of horses under both codes for the 2024 season and we can’t wait to get things started.

That’s the end of Vol. 3 of the SSP and I look forward to bringing you Vol. 4 in the New Year. If there is anything we can do please do let us know john@syndciates.racing.

Happy New Year one and all may it be filled with winners galore!
