The Sunday Syndicates Post – Vol. 3, Issue 2

Entries for our “3 to follow” competition close today. We’ve had a super uptake and we can’t wait to get stuck in and start a friendly rivalry amongst our owners. Jack and I have decided to get in on the action and in the unlikely event that one of us win the prize will be passed onto our closest rival. Here’s our teams:

Team JB

Nós na Gaoithe – she’s run 9 times has won twice and placed a further 3 times. An official rating of 121 leaves her on point for some of the big handicap hurdles at the big spring festivals.

Freedom Falls – our most fun 2-y-o of last season. A model of consistency without getting her head in front but a rating of 81 with her maiden tag still intact makes for an exciting season.

New Bay ex. Need You Now – by our luckiest sire, out of a stakes winning mare destined for an exciting young trainer. She’s already cantering up sides well and could be one for some early action in 2023 with the Goffs Million the main aim.

Team JC

Nós na Gaoithe – “I think Nós may have finished on a whimper but I wouldn’t let that distract from an excellent season. She’s a big baby and 2023 could be the making of her.”

Walk In The Park ex. Pharenna – “I was very torn on this one as there is a short head between all our bumper horses. I was very close to picking the Milan and Masked Marvel as I think they will be early but the earliest maybe the Walk in the Park so she gets the nod.”

Snowhaven – “I’m trying to win this so instead of doing what I expect most people will do and pick Freedom Falls or Fast Tara, I think Snowhaven didn’t get to show her true running in one start and she was always meant to be a three year old – hopefully I’m right.”

Big success for big day out

The weather held solid for us last Sunday and hats off to Naas for providing a great day out. We were delighted to welcome 75 owners to the track. It was clear from the outset that it would not just be a Syndicates.Racing affair with the a jam packed carpark. Naas put on a great show as always with massive crowds, a great atmosphere, fantastic food and top class racing.

We were delighted to see the Fifty Stars Standing at Sunnyhill Stud bumper won by a son of Sea The Stars in the shape of the Paul Nolan trained Cut The Rope. We would like to extend our thanks to the racecourse for allowing us to kick off the new year in style.

Stallion trail head turners

Fifty Stars and Far Above went down a treat at the annual ITM Stallion Trail over the weekend. Fifty Stars wasn’t long off the plane from Australia this time last year and even though he looked great then he has really let down into a fine looking horse with that massive walk. Michael Hickey assures us you won’t see the finished article until this time next year but one thing is for certain, if his foals come out looking like him we will be very, very pleased.

Whilst we eagerly await the first foals by Fifty Stars, Compas Stallions third crop sire Far Above did nothing but impress with his first crop foals in the sales ring last year. They averaged over three times his covering fee and were bought by all of the top judges, both end users and pinhookers. With over 250 mares covered in his first two seasons he looks set to be popular again this year.

Next Gen

We received some exciting updates this week on both our flat and national hunt strings. Zoustar yet again took the Australian sales rings by storm during the week which had us frothing at the mouth about our Zoustar filly with Amy Murphy. (view original post to see video below)

Meanwhile back on home shores Snowhaven is back into the swing of things in Commonstown. It was wonderful to see just how much she has improved physically for her winter break. She’s up to 483kgs now so she’s a big girl with an exciting season ahead. (view original post to see video below)

Whilst owners received updates from Closutton about Cabaret King and West End Victory whom look set for exciting spring campaigns. Both horses are with Willie Mullins and look to continue our fine record with the trainer.

The #ArtOfTheMating Returns in 2023

Jack will be back in 2023 with panel discussions based on topics you would like to hear about with celebrity guests. An informative, educational and enjoyable medium to learn and grow your knowledge in the industry with a sprinkling of craic added in. We want to hear from you so tell us what you would like us to cover in the comments section below or over on Twitter.

Jargon Busters

At the start of a new year there’s a lot that changes in a horses life so here’s a couple of jargon busters to help you along:

Jan 1 is the official birthday of every horse in the northern hemisphere. Whilst each individual horse has a specific DOB they don’t abide by it like humans do. This is for the benefit of the race program and breeding to keep specific age groups together, much like age groups in sports. So happy birthday to all of our horses.

Weight gains- this is the part I love the most about this time of year. Getting the horses back in after their breaks and seeing how they have progressed from one year to the next. The average weight gain for flat horses is 20kg. Snowhaven gained 25kg, Fast Tara put on 27kg and Freedom Falls gained 31kg so it looks like we’ve an exciting bunch of 3-y-os on our hands.

Stores are 3-y-o national hunt horses. We purchased 4 stores last year (Ellen Kelly, Milan filly, Masked Marvel filly and a Walk In The Park filly) all of which turned 4 on Jan 1 meaning they are no longer “store horses”. The main store sales in Ireland are the Goffs Land Rover Sale and the Tattersalls Ireland Derby sale both held in the summer time

Thank you.
