The Sunday Syndicates Post – Vol. 2, Issue 29

An absolutely manic couple of months has seen us come away with four absolute belters by Zoustar, Dark Angel, New Bay and Gleneagles. They’ve been hugely popular but you all already know that so instead of trying to sell you the horses we said that we’d give you an insight to the work that goes on behind the scenes to source these fillies.

The brains and the brawn

Jack has bought horses in some very strange places. Number one, that will not be topped, is when he bought Listen Dear whilst in a Karaoke Bar in Japan. The second however, will probably come close. At the beginning of Book 2 Jack informed me that he was en route to Singapore for the Grand Prix. He was unsure if he would have Wifi on the plane or not so we discussed our shortlist and instructions (which are very rare in the Cantillon world) were given.

Low and behold before the first horse walked into the ring an elated JC had got in touch proclaiming from the skies above that there was Wifi on the plane and that he would be in action. We had our homework done, I had been on the sales ground from early Saturday morning and had 500+ horses looked at before the sale had begun.

Our usual modus operandi on sales day when Jack isn’t in attendance is that we have out shortlist worked out (which is usually very long as to allow for horses that may fall through the cracks) and I spend the day strolling in and out of the ring usually getting beat on horses that we have severely undervalued with Jack plugged into my ears in hysterics at the thoughts of me walking in and out like a yo-yo. However, when the one does fall through the cracks we’re bang there ready to pounce which illustrates the importance of having the homework and ground work done as to be not caught on the hop.

Our first horse of the week was purchased when Jack was some 30-40k feet above Baku. A sporadic wifi connection resulted in a loss of communication without any firm instructions but when Jack tuned back in he couldn’t believe just how well we had done, another value purchase.

It’s not all plane sailing for the week. We tend to end up bidding on and underbidding a lot of horses that go through the ring. We underbid the Zoustar half brother to Yafta out of a stakes winning mare. I knew that we were keen to secure a Zoustar and this was the first one that i saw that I thought would be a bit of value. Of course we got a little bit carried away and started dreaming of what may be…

When all is said and done we look at thousands of horses each sales season, we discuss, digest and research hundreds of those, we get them vetted, talk to consignors and spend at least 12hrs a day on the sales complex everyday trying to source the best value and next Syndicates.Racing star. It’s a tiring but enjoyable process that takes a lot of work but when it all comes to fruition on the racetrack with owners in attendance the hard yards are always worth it.
