The Tuesday Take: Six predictions for horse racing in 2024

I don’t think we will see this next year but we will see him.

Jack, any predictions for next year for this week’s Tuesday Take? – Johnny Canning

  1. Frankie Dettori will return to the UK and ride at Royal Ascot but won’t ride a winner. He’s coming back but it will be trickier for Frankie without investing his time domestically. Wesley Ward has struggled of late, he might not even get on the best US horses. He won’t get his pick of the European runners either, he might just draw a blank despite coming back.

2. Aidan O’Brien won’t win the Derby. The trainer of City of Troy and Henry Longfellow won’t win the Derby?! I know a little bit ridiculous but City of Troy is by Justify and Henry Longfellow is by Dubawi (but, yes, out of Oaks winning Minding). I just think they might be best seen at a little bit shorter and it will open the door for Ancient Wisdom. No doubt one of them will win the Triple Crown now but I’ll take them on.

3. I predict they won’t but English racing should strike for transparency on media rights income from racecourses. There appears to be a huge amount allocated to racecourse for putting on their races and yet minuscule amounts allocated towards the prize money of those race – this is not sustainable.  If I was them I would strike until the books were opened.

4. At least 50% of the Syndicates.Racing two year olds will win at two. We put a huge amount of effort into sourcing our team for you every year – it’s huge source of pride when they go on to deliver for our Syndicates.Racing family. An interesting aspect about our team for next year is they are more forward in their profile than previous years (faster sires, look earlier). I think this will mean lots of two year old action and hopefully winning action. 66% of our breeze up horses won at two, surely 50% of our two year olds will too. I’m very excited to be honest and picked out one of the fastest as my pick of the week below.

5. Jack Kennedy will be champion jockey for the first time but the wait will go on for Gordon Elliott. Jack Kennedy is over 20 wins clear of Paul Townend and he won’t be caught to win his first championship. I think Willie’s team is so strong it’s difficult for Paul to keep picking the right horse to catch Jack. Willie will look like he’s in trouble for the trainers championship but I can tell you he’s been more patient then ever this year with his horses so we’ll finish like a steam train and even win on the bumper cars at Punchestown.

6. Southwell maiden winner Night Raider will win a Group 1. Recently seen winning a Novice Stakes at Southwell, it wouldn’t typically be the source of Group 1 talent however he recorded the eight highest RPR on any any horse this season. Think about that for second – all those Curragh, Newmarket, Leopardstown, York, Ascot maidens all year long and you rock up to Southwell in December and come in the top ten. He isn’t in the English Guineas but he’s in the Irish version – that might be the one but as a brother to our own Far Above it wouldn’t surprise me if he had the pace to run very well in something like a Commonwealth Cup despite winning over further on debut.

It’s your now chance now, submit your predictions for next year in our form below and I’ll pick the top picks to feature next week from our Syndicates.Racing family.

Jack’s Pick of the Week

When predicting that we’ll have at least 50% winners from our two year olds next year the horse that kept whirring around my head that would win and possibly be our first winner too is our Far Above colt with Tim Donworth. He’ll be racing for massive prize money (€50,000 maidens with 80% extra too as he’s eligible for French premiums) with Tim, he’s got a huge speed family and his physique all point to being one our earliest runners. Shares are just €495 for 1% and when people are asking me for an early horse with a great chance for a return on investment, this is the horse I’m sending them.
